This oriole feeder is based on a miniature version of the classic American yard wishing well. This one is made from a 5/8 inch thick cedar fence board which keeps building costs very low. An L-hook or an eight-penny finishing nail on each side holds an orange half. All patterns drawn FULL SIZE. Measures 13-1/2 inches high.
This is a vintage woodworking plan. Visit our FAQ page for a full definition. View the Larger Image Slideshow to see the actual item you are buying. Check your own scrap pile against the materials list before you set out for the lumber yard. You may very well have some material on hand left over from a previous job. We show fieldstone for the well walls but other masonry materials are also suitable. Wind a few turns of the rope onto the windlass drum and tie on the bucket. The plan shows you how to build the bucket. A unique use of the well is an outdoor cold drink server. The well interior will hold a large wash tub full of ice. Simply reach in, grab a cold one and sit on the cool stone under the shade of the roof.
The base is made from short pieces of 2x4 inch stock lumber. Ideal use for scrap wood. Special ledges inside let you raise and lower the plant platform in 1-1/2 inch increments. Roof allows some sun ...
This wooden wishing well is relatively easy to construct using common size lumber and will be the feature in any garden or yard. The wishing well is almost 900mm (3ft)in diameter and stands almost 2400mm (8ft) high. Most of the well is constructed out of surfaced (dressed) 100x50 (2x4) lumber. The exceptions are the roof boards which are from 150x25mm (1x6inch) stock, and the spindle/handle and washers/handle arm which are from 25x25mm (1x1inch) and 100x25mm (1x4inch) stock respectively. The diameter and height of the well can easily be changed if so required. The diameter (well width) can made bigger or smaller by simply adding or subtracting the number of palings (vertical wall members) around the cylindrical base. The height can be altered by making the two extended palings (roof supports) either longer or shorter.
This medium-size wishing well stands approximately 1400mm (4 ft-8 inches) high and 600mm (2ft) wide. It is a cross between a small planter and a full-size wishing well, and can be used either as a planter box or a garden ornament.
