Another project that caught the attention of Norm while at the Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts was a Shaker washstand. Back in the day before indoor plumbing, people would get their morning and evening wash with such cabinetry. Many beautiful styles survived the era, and this is one of the more basic. But there is beauty is basic construction too. The angled top features through dovetail joinery and a raised panel door below. This wooden wishing well is relatively easy to construct using common size lumber and will be the feature in any garden or yard. The wishing well is almost 900mm (3ft)in diameter and stands almost 2400mm (8ft) high. Most of the well is constructed out of surfaced (dressed) 100x50 (2x4) lumber. The exceptions are the roof boards which are from 150x25mm (1x6inch) stock, and the spindle/handle and washers/handle arm which are from 25x25mm (1x1inch) and 100x25mm (1x4inch) stock respectively. The diameter and height of the well can easily be changed if so required. The diameter (well width) can made bigger or smaller by simply adding or subtracting the number of palings (vertical wall members) around the cylindrical base. The height can be altered by making the two extended palings (roof supports) either longer or shorter.
