This was my first endeavor into making a piece of furniture. There was a lot more to it than I first thought. I copied from existing pieces of furniture that we have so that it would match. The biggest challenge was matching the stain. All in all I am pretty pleased with the way it turned out and I think you can make one too.

These plans are derived from Michael Dunbar is Colonial Cupboard hand tool project in Fine Woodworking Number 151, October 2001, pages 64-71. The project is scaled up slightly from his plans to accommodate three rows of DVD is and a single row of CD is. The case is a dovetailed box with a mortise and tenon face frame and door. Shelves are set into dados in the sides and the back is formed by ship-lapped boards.

I started with some boards of pine shelving. This lumber is fairly clear of knots, and planed smoother than construction lumber would be.
