Window Trellis Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about window trellis plans. If you want to add unique appeal to your windows, you can build this super simple trellis. This is just one design, but you can make lots of adjustments to your project. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a window trellis

Back corbel support

Back corbel support

The first step of the project is to build the back support for the corbels. As you can see in the diagram, you need to make decorative cuts to the bottom of the board. Use a jigsaw for the curved cuts and smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Use 4×6 lumber for the top support of the corbel. Mark the cut lines to the beam and then use a jigsaw to make the cuts.

Assembling the corbels

Next, assemble the frame of the corbel, as shown in the diagram. Align the components on a level surface. Center the top support to the back board. Drill pilot holes through the back board and insert 4 1/2″ screws into the 4×6 beam.

Braces - Window Trellis

Use 4×4 lumber for the diagonal braces. Make 45 degree cuts at both ends of the braces. In addition, make a curved cut to the brace for enhance looks.

Fitting the diagonal braces

Fit the diagonal braces to the corbel, making sure you align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes through the braces and insert 4 1/2″ screws to secure them into place.

After building the two window trellis supports, you have to attach them on both sides of the window. Use a spirit level to plumb the supports and drill pilot holes through the back boards. Insert 4 1/2″ screws to secure them to the framing of the house. Remember that you can adjust the distance between the corbels to suit your needs.

Fit 2×2 slats to the top of the supports. Place a piece of 2×2 lumber between the slats to create even gaps. Make sure the side overhangs are equal. Drill pilot holes through the slats and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure the to the supports.

The last step of the project is to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint over the components to protect them from the elements.
