DIY Simple Wall Hanging Bookcase

Simple and easy doesn't have to be boring and plain. Here is a DIY wall hanging bookcase with a bit of character added to it.

So my family and I were getting ready to go to the library and I say to my daughter, "Do you have all your library books?"

Her response is to shrug her shoulders at me.

I say, "What do you mean, you don't know."

She tells me a sob story of how her little sister ran off with a few of her books during the week and now she doesn't know where they are.

"Why did your sister have your library books in the first place?" I say.

Her response is to shrug her shoulders at me.

That's ok.  I know why.  She doesn't have a spot to place all of her books so that sister knows to keep her hands off them.

Their is a simple and easy solution to that.

DIY Wall Hanging Bookcase

Materials

2 - 1x8s
24" of 1x2 material
Wood Glue
4 - drywall anchors with screws
Your choice of wood stain or paint

Note: Board lengths are 8' unless otherwise noted.

Cut List

4 - 1x8s @ 30"
5 - 1x8s @ 12"
2 - 1x2s @ 10"

Step 1

Cut all your boards to length.  If you live in the U.S. then both of the big box home improvement stores will be able to cut your boards to length for you.  All you have to do is ask an associate in the board cutting area.

Step 2

Routing the dadoes in each of the horizontal shelf pieces is next.  If using pocket holes to assemble your bookcase then skip this step.

Below are the measurements from the ends that I used to place the vertical dividers.

Step 3

Clamp the top and bottom portions together separate from the center vertical divider as shown in the video above.

Step 4

Now attach the 1x2s to each of the two sections.  I used pocket holes and glue to attach mine.

Step 5

Now the center vertical divider can be glued into its dadoes finishing the assembly process of the bookcase.

Final Thoughts

That is all their is to it.  Some 1x8s and dadoes coupled with some wood glue and a few screws provides a pretty nice and elegant looking place to display not only your books but also any other memorabilia you deem worthy.

It can be built in an afternoon and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.  The design can be hung on a wall or you can add more levels to it, sit it on the floor and then secure it to the wall for stability.
It is easily customizable to any size, shape and configuration that suits your fancy or your space.

Often a simple design is even more useful than a complicated one.  It does the job just as well and the experience gained in completing it goes a long way toward making the next project even better.

I made this bookcase out of pine and it's simple construction is designed to be built with basic woodworking tools.

However, don't let its simplicity fool you.  The finished project is a useful addition to any
room in your house.
