Small Entryway Bench Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step woodworking project is about small entryway bench plans. This article features detailed instructions for building a simple entryway bench. We have designed the plans to keep the expenditures under control and to involve the least amount of work possible. This is the easiest small entryway bench plans you will find on internet.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the bench won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Small Entryway Bench Plans

Building the sides

Building the sides

First of all, we recommend you to build the sides of the bench. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to use 1×12 lumber and to drill pocket holes along the top edge.

Fitting the bottom shelf

Fitting the bottom shelf

Next, build the bottom component out of 1×12 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the bottom shelf. Align the edges with great care and insert 1 1/4″ pocket holes to lock everything together tightly. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square. Leave enough room under the bottom to fit a 1×3 slat.

Fitting the partitions

Build the partitions out of 1×12 lumber, making sure you cut them at the right size. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the planks and secure them to the bottom shelf using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and check if the corners are square. Leave no gaps between the components.

Fitting the bottom trim

Build the stretcher out of 1×3 lumber. Drill pocket holes though the slat, as shown in the diagram. Insert 1 1/4″ screws to secure the components into place tightly. Add glue to the joints in order to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Attaching the top

Attaching the top

Attach the top of the bench, as shown in the diagram. Make sure you leave 3/4″ from the back edge of the bench, in order to ease the trims installation.

Building the side trims

One of the last steps of the project is to build the trims for the top of the small entryway bench. Use 1×3 lumber to build the side trims. Mark the cut lines and make a curved cut at one end, as shown in the diagram. Smooth the cut edges thoroughly.

Assembling the trims

Assembling the trims

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the back trim and secure it to the sides using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.

Attaching the back

Attaching the back

Attach a piece of 1/4″ plywood to the back of the bench, as in the plans. Insert brad nails to lock the sheets to the frame components. Attach the trims to the top of the bench and lock them to the sides using 1 1/4″ brad nails.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the wooden bench from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain.
