This step by step diy project is about storage bed plans. If you want to build a beautiful and stylish twin size bed frame but also create additional storage space, we recommend you to check out the instructions described in the article. Adjust the size of the components with great care and lock them together by using waterproof glue and galvanized screws following the instructions.
It is essential to choose the right materials before starting the construction and the assembly of the bed frame. As you will see in the project, you need to choose durable lumber with a nice appearance, such as pine, cedar or redwood. Make sure the components are in a good visual condition and choose professional tools when adjusting their size. Take accurate measurements and join the components with glue and screws. Building a storage bed
Building the front storage unit
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the front storage unit. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to cut the components out of 3/4″ plywood. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components as well as of the partition.
Make sure the edges are flush and the corners perfectly square before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws into place. Add glue to the joints to create a durable bond.
Fitting the back to the front unit
Cut a piece of 1/4″ plywood to the dimensions described in the diagram and secure it to the storage unit frame by using 1 1/4″ screws. It is essential to make sure the corners of the unit are square, otherwise the end result won’t suit your standards.
Make sure the edges are flush one with another before inserting the screws into place. In addition, we recommend you to leave no gaps between the components.
Fitting the trims to the front unit
In order to enhance the look of the twin storage bed, we recommend you to attach 1×2 trims to the front face of the storage unit. Cut the trims at the right size . Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical trims and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the horizontal trims.
Align the trims to the front storage unit with great care and secure them into place by using finishing nails and waterproof glue.
Building the side units
Building the side storage units is a straight forward process, as you need to pay attention to the instructions and use quality 3/4″ plywood. Cut the components with great attention and smooth the edges. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and of the partition.
Make sure the edges are flush and check if the corners are right-angled before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws into place. Leave no gaps between the wooden components.
Attaching the back to the sides
Cut the back for the side storage units out of 1/4″ plywood and secure it to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the edges are flush one with another.
Fitting the trims to the side units
Attach the 1×2 trims to the front face of the storage units, in the same manner described above. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the vertical components and secure them to the top and bottom trims using 1 1/4″ screws.
Make sure the corners are right-angled and leave no gaps between the trims. Add glue to the joints. Align all the edges with great attention and secure the trims to the components by using finishing nails.
Building the middle frame
Continue the woodworking project by building the frame for the bed. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 1×4 lumber. Take accurate measurements and cut them at the right size.
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and insert 1 1/4′ screws into the side components. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add glue to the joints.
Assembling the bed frame
The next step of the indoor woodworking project is to assemble the bed frame, using the instructions described in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the sides of the middle frame and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the side units.
In addition, drill pilot holes through the side units and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the front storage unit. Add glue between the joints and make sure the edges are perfectly flush.
Fitting the plywood support
Cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood at the dimensions described in the diagram and fit it over the middle frame. Work with attention and secure the piece of plywood to the frame by using 1 1/4″ screws, although it is an optional step.
Storage bed plans
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden bed in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
