Building a storage cart

Building the supports for the cart

Building the supports for the cart

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the supports for the storage cart. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the horizontal components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the vertical supports.

Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws. Add glue to the joints to create a rigid structure.

Building the shelves

Building the shelves

The next step of the woodworking project is to build the shelves for the storage cart. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the shelves out of 3/4″ plywood and to drill pilot holes along the edges.

Build the trims for the shelves out of 1×3 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and secure them to the shelves using finishing nails. Leave no gaps between the components.

Fitting the shelves

Fitting the shelves

Continue the project by fitting the shelves to the structure, as seen in the plans. It is essential to align the components with great care before inserting the screws through the supports, otherwise the cart won’t have a professional result.

Plumb the supports with a spirit level before inserting the screws, and make sure the shelves are perfectly horizontal. Smooth the exposed edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

Fitting the caster wheels

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the storage cart in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
