Nightstand Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about nightstand plans. If you want to enhance the look of your bedroom with a wooden nightstand, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. There are many designs and tools to choose from, so make sure you take a look over several alternatives, before starting the actual construction and final assembly.

Align the wooden components at both ends before driving in the screws. Don’t forget to pre-drill holes in the components, as to prevent the wood from splitting. Moreover, don’t forget to countersink the head of the screws, before inserting the wooden screws. Last but not least, apply a good wood filler in the holes, let it dry out properly and sand the surface thoroughly with 120-grit sandpaper, before applying the final coats of stain. Nightstand Plans

Building the frame of the nighstand

Building the frame of the nightstand

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the nightstand. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 3/4″ plywood. Mark the cut lines on the sheets and get the job done with a circular saw.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components, make sure the edges are flush and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the top and bottom components.

Fitting the back

Fitting the back

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the back to the structure of the nightstand. Drill pocket holes along the edges and fit it to the structure, as described in the image.

Make sure the edges are flush and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame of the wooden nightstand. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess by using a damp cloth. Check if the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws.

Fitting the shelves

Fitting the shelves

The next step of the woodworking project is to fit the supports and the shelf to the nightstand. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to drill pilot holes at both ends of the 1×2 supports.

Fit the supports between the sides of the nightstand and use a spirit level to check if they are horizontal. Insert 1 1/4″ screws into the sides. Afterwards, fit the shelf into place and secure it with 1 1/2″ screws.

Attaching the base to the nightstand

Attaching the base to the nightstand

Attaching the base to the nightstand is a straight-forward process, but you need to take several aspects into account, in order to get a professional result. Therefore, build the legs out of 2×2 lumber and the frame out of 1×2 lumber.

Top Tip: Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 1×2 slats and secure them to the legs. Center the base to the bottom of the nightstand, drill pocket holes and insert 1 1/4′ screws.

Building the drawer

Building the drawer

Assembling the drawer for the nightstand is a simple process, as you need to cut the components at the right size and to smooth the edges with sandpaper. Drill pilot holes through the face components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components.

Drill pilot holes along the edges of the bottom component and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with sandpaper.

Fitting the insto the opening

Fit the drawer into place, makings sure you leave 3/4″ on each side of it. Install 3/4″ slides on both sides of the drawer, making sure it opens and closes properly.

Fitting the drawer face

Fitting the drawer face

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to attach the face of the drawer into place. Mark the cut lines on a piece of 3/4″ plywood and align it into place, as in the diagram.

Top Tip: Make sure you leave a gap of 1/8″ around the drawer face, in order to make sure it will open and close easily. Drill pilot holes through the drawer and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the face. Add glue to the joint.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, you need to fill the cracks with wood putty and let it dry out for several hours. Afterwards, sand the wooden surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues thoroughly.
