DIY Luna Dining Chair: Step-by-Step Plans and Instructions

Previously, I posted plans for the Luna Dining Table… So why not build a few chairs to match? The Luna Dining Chair plans feature a floating seat, solid back, and are super-easy to build!

Materials:

  • 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws
  • 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws
  • 5/8″ brad nails
  • 1-1/4″ brad nails
  • Wood glue (<– affiliate link!)
  • Sandpaper (100, 150, 220 grits)
  • Finishing supplies (primer & paint, or stain, sealer)

Lumber:

Materials listed are to build ONE chair

  • 1 1×2 at 17″
  • 2 – 3/4″ square dowels at 3′
  • 2 – 2×2 at 8′
  • 1 – 2′ x 2′ sheet of 1/4″ plywood
  • 1 – 2′ x 4′ sheet of 3/4″ plywood

Cut List:

  • 2 – 2×4 at 42-3/16″ – Back Legs
  • 2 – 2×2 at 16-1/2″ – Front Legs
  • 6 – 2×2 at 17″ – Front, Back & Side Stretchers
  • 3 – 3/4″ square dowels at 17″ – Seat Spacers
  • 1 – 3/4″ square dowel at 18-1/2″ – Front Seat Spacer
  • 1 – 1×2 at 17″ – Seat Support
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 15″ x 17″ – Back
  • 1 – 1/4″ plywood at 15″ x 17″ – Inner Back
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 20″ x 20″ – Seat

Step One

Draw the legs on the 2x4s as shown in the drawing and cut the legs as one piece using a jigsaw or a bandsaw.

Step Two

Cut the pieces for the front legs and cut the tapers in the same manner. Cut the pieces for the front and back stretchers, and drill pocket holes in each end. Secure the front stretcher to the front legs with the tapers facing to the inside using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws. Step Three

Cut the pieces for the side stretchers and drill pocket holes in each end. Secure to the front and back legs as shown using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws. Luna Dining Chair Plans-Side Stretchers

Step Four

Cut the pieces for the seat spacers. Secure the side and back pieces first, using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails. Secure the front spacer piece using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails. The back face of the spacers will be flush with the inside face of the stretchers. Luna Dining Chair Plans-Seat Spacers

Step Five

Cut the piece for the seat support. Set the pocket hole jig for 3/4″ material and drill pocket holes in each end. Secure to the front and back stretchers and spacers using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. The top edge of the support will be flush with the top edge of the spacers. Step Six

Cut the pieces for the back frame. Set the pocket hole jig for 1-1/2″ material and drill pocket holes in each end. Secure to the upper back legs as shown using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws. Luna Dining Chair Plans-Back Frame

Step Seven

Cut the piece for the back. Set the pocket hole jig for 3/4″ material and drill pocket holes in all four edges. Secure the back inside the back frame using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. The outside face of the back will be flush with the front face of the upper back legs. Cut the piece for the inner back. Secure to the back (to cover the pocket holes) using glue and 5/8″ brad nails. Step Eight

Cut the piece for the seat and apply edge banding, if desired. Cut the notches using a jigsaw. Secure the seat to the spacers and the center support  using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.
