This step by step diy woodworking project is about outdoor wooden bench plans. If you want to learn more about building an outdoor bench with back rest, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. Work with attention and invest in high-quality materials, to prevent the wood from splitting and to get the job done in a professional manner.

Invest in high-quality materials such as pine, redwood or cedar, as the bench will be exposed to bad weather. Select the lumber with great care, making sure the slats are in a good condition and perfectly straight. Drill pocket holes before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. Building a wooden bench with backrest

Building-the-frame-of-the-bench

The first step of the woodworking project is about building the frame of the outdoor wooden bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to build the legs out of 4×4 lumber and the frame out of 2×3 lumber.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and check if the corners are right-angled.

Work with attention and plan everything with great care when building the seat supports. If you want to add character to the outdoor bench, we recommend you to cut out the supports as to create a nice and curved seat.

Mark the cut lines on the 2×3 slats and get the job done with a jigsaw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a cleaner. Build two pieces of each kind.

Fitting-the-seat-supports

Secure the seat supports to the frame of the bench with backrest. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Leave no gaps between the components when fitting the screws.

Attaching the seat slats

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the seat slats into place. Cut the 1×3 and the 1×4 slats to the right size and lock them to the frame with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.

Leave even gaps between the slats, by placing pieces of 1/4″ plywood. Align the slats at both ends, drill pilot holes and secure them to the frame with galvanized screws. Round the exposed edges with a router and remove the residues with cleaner.

Fitting the backrest slats

The next step of the garden woodworking project is to build the back rest. In order to enhance the look of the bench, we recommend you to fit a 2×3 slat and a 2×6 slat between the back posts.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the slats and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Check if the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws and add waterproof glue to the joints.

Outdoor wooden bench plans

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the bar from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
