Kids Chair Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about kids chair plans. If you want to build a small chair for your kids, you should pay attention to the instructions shown in this article. If you want to build something beautiful with your kids or for your kids, we recommend you to take a short look over the rest of the related projects, such as a small table or a beautiful playhouse.

Taking into account there are more alternatives to choose from, we strongly suggest you to pay attention to the design of the small chairs before starting the actual assembly.  As a general rule, you should always adjust the appearance of the project before starting the construction of the components, in order to suit your needs perfectly. If you are going to place the chairs outdoor, choose weather-resistant lumber. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Kids Chair Plans

Building the frame of the chair

Building the frame of the chair

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the chair. As you can notice in the image, we recommend you to use 1×3 lumber and screws, if you want to get the job done in a professional manner.

After cutting the wooden components at the right size, we recommend you to joint them together with 1 1/4″ screws and waterproof glue. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the galvanized screws.

Attaching the legs

Attaching the legs

Continue the small woodworking project by attaching the legs to the seat frame. As you can notice in the image, we we recommend you to make the back legs slightly larger, as they have to support the back rest.

After making sure the legs are plumb and the frame is horizontal, we recommend you to drill pilot holes and to insert the screws into place. Add waterproof glue to the joints, if you want to get a rigid structure.

Attaching the trims

If you really want to score points when talking about the appearance of the kids chairs, we strongly recommend you to add  trims between the side legs. After adjusting the size of the trims, lock them into place with glue and finishing nails.

Attaching the seat

The next step of the weekend project is to attach the seat slats into place. As you can easily notice in the image, we recommend you to adjust the size of the 1×3 slats with a circular saw, before locking them into place with 1 1/4″ galvanized screws.

Moreover, it is essential to place the slats equally spaced, if you want to enhance the look of the small chair. Countersink the head of the screws and smooth the cut edges, to get a professional result.

One of the last steps of the project is to fit the 1×3 slats between the back legs. As you can easily notice in the plans, a back support will add value to the project and enhance the look of the chair.

Top Tip: If you have only basic tools and limited skills in the woodworking field, attaching the slats between the legs by creating pocket holes is a great idea. Use a spirit level to get a durable and accurate result.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden kids chair in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
