Build a Portland Umbrella Stand

An Excellent Piece for Storing Umbrellas

Who can’t use an umbrella stand? It is so nice to have one specific place to corral the umbrellas. I look at mine this way – when my kids ask where their umbrellas are, I actually have an answer – provided they put it there in the first place!

The free plans to build a Portland Umbrella Stand are very simple and a quick build, plus it can be finished any way you like! 1/2″ plywood material (like PureBond plywood!) can be used as well as 1/2″ craft boards available in any of the big-box home improvement stores!

Step One

Cut the pieces for the side frames. Cut the curve in the upper frame piece as shown using a jigsaw or a band saw. Drill pocket holes in each end of the frame pieces, as well as each end of the slats. The slats will be positioned 1-1/2″ in from the edge of the upper and lower frame pieces, with 1-1/2″ spacing between them. Secure the slats to the frame pieces using glue and 1″ pocket hole screws, then secure to the legs using glue and 1″ pocket hole screws.

Step Two

Cut the piece for the bottom. Secure to the lower frame pieces of the sides using glue and 1″ brad nails, positioning the piece so that there is a 1/2″ space at each side to allow for the end frames.

Step Three

Cut the pieces for the end frames. Cut the curve in the upper frame piece as shown using a jigsaw or a band saw. Drill pocket holes in each end of the slats only. Position the slats 1-1/4″ away from the ends of the frame pieces with 1-1/2″ spacing between them. Secure the slats to the frame pieces using glue and 1″ pocket hole screws, then secure to the legs using glue and 1″ brad nails.
