Train Coin Bank

The actual finished item.
This is a very simple project but only the assembly is for the young woodcrafter. Cutting and shaping the parts is strictly an adult project. The project is made from ¾" pine, 1/8" pine, a 2" x 2" scrap, a 1-1/8" diameter dowel, four 2" diameter wheels, and five 1½" long 3/8" diameter dowel plugs. You will also need one snall cup hook, glue, 200 grit sandpaper, eight (8) ¾" brads, and ten 1½" nails
1. Sand all wood pieces smooth with 200 grit sandpaper.
2. Stand the front and back pieces up as shown to the irght.
3. Put a little glue on the top edges then place the right side on top making sure the edges are aligned and flush.
4. Nail the side to the front & back with four of the ¾" brads. (See picture below.)
5. Turn this assembly over and place a little glue on the top edges then place the left side on top, align it like you did the right side.
6. Nail it in place with four of the ¾" brads.
( <<<< See picture to the left.)
7. Stand the cab upside-down and put glue on the edges of the front and back then place the bottom over it - flush against the back and centered side-to-side. (See picture to the right. >>>>>>)
8. Nail the bottom to the cab with two 1½" nails into the front and two into the back. The hole in the base goes over the cab.
9. Place a little glue on the bottom of the boiler piece and position it flush against the cab and centered side-to-side.
10. Set this assembly on a table but allow the cab to hang over the edge.
( <<<< See picture to the left.)
11. Nail the boiler to the bottom with two 1½" nails.
12. Turn the train over (right-side-up) then glue, and nail, the engine top piece (cut off dowel) to the top of the boiler with two 1½" nails. (See picture >>>>>>)

Dull the nail points to prevent splitting the dowel.

13. Glue and nail the top of the cab on keeping it centered side-to-side and front-to-back. (See picture to the right. >>>>>>)
14. Slide one wheel onto each axle peg and glue into each of the four holes in the side of the base being very careful to NOT get any glue on the wheels..
15. Glue the smoke stack into the top of the boiler engine top piece.
16. Nail the coin cover (a 1
½" circle) over the hole in the base. The nail should be near the edge to allow the door to swing open and should be snug but open with effort..
17. Screw the cup hook into the back of the base. This is the hook for the 'next car'.
18. Drop the penny into the top and start saving for college!
