We have found that this particular house is very popular with the Red Squirrels in our yard. We always put out a couple just so the Squirrels will leave the other birdhouses alone and not chew the entrance holes to enlarge them. Finches and some Sparrows prefer a 2 inch diameter entrance hole 4 inch to 5 inch above the floor and a body cavity of approx. 6 x 6 x 6 inch high. You may use flat blocks of wood for dowel bases for our Country Projects, but a shaped base adds more interest. This projects uses a Heart shaped base, but you may mix and match the base shape or the bird plaque to create wide variety of designs.

These flowers are a simple project for window boxes, indoor planters or in the yard. Cut the leaves and flower from 3/4 inch pine. You may use a 3/8 inch diameter dowel as the stem, but we prefer steel strap or band. This is available at many hardware stores and you can usually pick up some scraps at your local lumberyard when they cut open bundles of lumber.
