Butcher-block kitchen countertops have traditionally been very popular and these days are often used as companion tops with other materials, such as solid-surface tops. In addition to their aesthetic appearance, they can receive hot pans without damage. I like to use a spatula in the kitchen. Wooden spoons are great for lifting things, but for general cooking they are poorly designed. Most spoon handles are simply turned dowels and uncomfortable to grip and use. A well made and carved spoon handle is a treat, but again the blade or usable portion is next to useless. Most solid surface countertop materials can only be installed by installers licensed by the manufacturer or distributor. One of the main reasons is traditional solid surface countertops are fabricated by building up 1/2-inch-thick materials with underlayment to create the appearance of thicker materials, then cutting and gluing-up a front edge, much in the same manner as a plastic laminate top over a plywood subsurface.
