Of course, they may be decoratively painted if you have the skill, but there are other useful techniques too. Try dipping the pieces in stain and then painting a single detail such as a heart or design over the stain. Dip the pieces in a wash (thinned paint that is opaque similar to stain) and paint detail lines or use a permanent ink felt pen or paint pen. Some birds, like Purple Martins, nest in flocks. These units may be joined into as big an apartment complex as you wish. Martins prefer a 2-1/2 inch entrance hole and a 6 x 6 x 6 inch cavity. They also prefer a platform to a perch. These units may be joined horizontally or vertically by attaching a mounting board to the backs of the apartments with 1-1/2 inch drywall screws. You may also hang the houses by connecting with screw eyes. We like to add an extra board to the top level for extra strength. Beginner skill level.
