Workbench, Garden (PDF) Potting plants and seedlings always leaves a bit of a mess, and if you’re like most people you probably don’t have a dedicated space for these gardening jobs. This project is well within the reach of anyone with a few simple hand tools and a weekend to spare. You can customise your workbench over time to create a valuable workspace – where you can have all your tools and materials easily to hand. The garden workbench measures 2100mm wide by 1800mm high at the rear.

Workbench, Classic A good, solid workbench is a basic of any woodworking shop, and although workbenches come in many different styles, types and sizes, a “classic” workbench style has evolved.

Workbench, Classic design A good, solid workbench is a basic of any woodworking shop, and although workbenches come in many different styles, types and sizes, a “classic” workbench style has evolved. Typically, these benches have both a front and end vise with dog holes in the top, as well as in one or both of the vises. These hold pieces of wood to plane, carve, route or for other chores. A recessed tool shelf is also often included. The bench shown is a combination of traditional European styling with a bit of styling from an old-time bench I bought many years ago at an auction.
Workbench Heavy-Duty (PDF) A great workbench needs to have a couple important qualities. First, it has to be solidly built. You don’t want it sliding or moving around as you work. Second, it has to offer options for clamping a workpiece securely in place. This way, you don’t have to worry about the workpiece shifting as you rout, sand, or cut. This workbench meets all these requirements — and more. The cutting diagrams and materials list are available to download in this Online Extra.

Workbench Hide-Away Workspace is at a premium in my small shop. So I built a workbench that folds down from the wall like an ironing board. I made it sturdy enough to handle most tasks. But best of all, it folds away into the wall when I don’t need it.

Workbench, Build A Timber (PDF) Whatever project you are working on, a good sturdy workbench is perhaps your best “workmate”. The design shown here is solid, versatile and low maintenance. But perhaps the best feature about this design is that it is easy to build. If the recommended size does not suit you it can easily be adjusted to your required size. If so, you will also need to adjust the size of the pre-cut “timber components” listed on the opposite page.
Workbench, The Holtzapffel (PDF) This weekend I’m putting the finishing touches on a workbench inspired by a design shown in Charles Holtzapffel’s “Construction, Action and Application of Cutting Tools Volume II.” I built the bench because it borrows the best features from three traditions: It has massive French bones with both English and German workholding. Holtzapffel himself was a reflection of this bench, a German who lived and worked in England.
Workbench, Classic Cabinet-base (PDF) This workbench has it all, classic good looks, plenty of storage, plus a top and vise able to handle the most demanding tasks. This is an excert from a sample Shopnotes magazine issue.
Workbench Tail and Face Vises (PDF) Vises can make or break a workbench. But you will not need to worry about that with this workbench vise. This vise is rock solid and will handle the most demanding tasks with ease.
Workstation, Modular Workbench (PDF) Who couldn’t use extra storage in their shop or garage? The challenge is coming up with a solution that works for the space you have. That’s where this trio of projects comes in. The cutting diagrams and materials list are available to download in this Online Extra.
Workbench, Quick and Easy This workbench is very simple in its design but it produces a very sturdy work surface for the shop or garage. It is constructed from common 2x4s, plywood and hardware that can be bought at any local lumberyard or home center. These plans produce a plain unpainted bench with no trim. If appearance is important, trim can be easily added and the bench can be painted.

Workbench, Shaker (PDF) Country-style furniture has been the most popular furniture in this country for decades. It is easy to understand why. Besides its look being visually pleasing and compatible with just about any home setting, it is also very functional. This handsome piece, which is inspired by the past, proves the point. Though the original served as a light-duty workbench in a Shaker community, its good looks makes this piece a welcome addition in just about any room.

Workbench by Woodsmith (PDF) Sturdy is an understatement! We designed this workbench plan to pass the the most rigid standards you could apply to a bench...and then some. That is why we use it in the Woodsmith shop! The massive mortise and tenon frame forms an extremely rigid foundation. The laminated top is a woodworker’s dream — large, very solid, and with plenty of clamping options, like a front vise and tail vise, both with opposing dog holes. This woodworking plan appeared in Woodsmith magazine No. 173
Workbench, Classic (PDF) More than just a centerpiece for your shop, this workbench is designed for serious business. Plan features heavy-duty slab top, bench dog holes, and a solid vise. Plus, a large cabinet supporting the bench. There’s also plenty of room to store tools. Workbench measures 36” high x 62” wide x 25-1/4” deep. We built the top out of laminated hard maple strips, and used solid cherry and cherry plywood for the cabinet. This workbench plan appeared Woodsmith No. 100.
Workbench, Mechanics (PDF) Here’s the perfect workbench for really messy jobs like fixing a greasy bicycle chain, sharpening your garden tools, or mixing a can of paint. Easy to build—simple 2x4’s for the legs and frame, and MDF for the sides, back, shelf, and top. You can build the basic bench in a weekend. Add another day or two for the drawers and the storage unit. We had our metal cover made at a local heating and air conditioning company. Using a special bending tool, they folded the edges of a large piece of sheet metal to fit over the MDF top. This gives you a very tough, durable and easy-to-clean work surface. The Mechanic’s Workbench is 68” wide x 33-3/4” deep x 26-3/4” high. This project was published in ShopNotes magazine No. 46.
Workbench, Knock-Down (PDF) Simple, yet the strong design makes this portable workstation a must-have accessory for any woodworker or DIY enthusiast. Unique plan lets you set the height at two different positions. Set it low for assembly or finishing. Go high for cutting plywood with your circular saw, or for use as another workbench or miter saw station. Add a few accessories (we’ll show you how) and you can set up a mobile shop just about anywhere. Includes instructions for using the knock-down workstation as a portable bench, a tool stand for your miter saw or planer, and an outfeed table for your table saw.

Workbench, European-style Cabinet Traditional, European-style workbenches have a lot of open space under the benchtop. Many woodworkers simply add a shelf over the stretchers to create some storage space. But this Workbench Cabinet is designed to maximize the storage capacity of that space. And as an added benefit, when it’s full of tools, the cabinet’s weight adds strength and stability to the bench.
