Stock cabinets are not likely to work well, but several new tool acquisitions helped produce a pair of cabinets that fit properly and perform duties as prescribed by my wife, plus one of my own requirements.
Fireplace mantels are actually easier that you might think. With some basic joinery techniques, a stunning face to your fireplace can be made in your own workshop. You will want a router table with some molding bits and an accurate way to miter the trim work. While specific measurements are given for this plan, with the concepts of joinery, you should easily be able to modify the plan to suit your needs.
